Background

Otto Harkaman never paid any mind to all the folks back home who told him that being a spacehand on a tramp freighter was a stupid idea.  He scoffed at the very idea that freewheeling it through the galaxy would be anything but pure excitement.  Otto has never been acused of being bright, either.  Now sixteen months into his illustrious adventure as a 3rd engineer (in charge of fuel purification and waste reclamation) he has earned his first one week shore leave.  The first day he was wide-eyed and ready to whoop it up like liberty on Joyeuse... the other six days (and a few more) he spent in a holding cell while "a little unrest" turned into a failed coup.  Because the judge who was supposed to hear his case became an early victim of the "bloodless" coup attempt, he had to appeal to the governor to be let go in time to make his ship.

Three days after his ship left port, Otto was finally released to Starport Authority.  With traffic so low due to the Amber rating of this world, Otto is ready to hire on to the first ship that will take him... or book passage if they won't!  Otto will be fairly desperate and persistant.  He is about as subtle as a kettle drum and about as smart.  He has a big heart and is quite trusting and will try about anything if ordered, prodded or cajoled.

Growing up on Gram / Sword Worlds, the third son of a metals broker, Otto had a comfortable home, but no real prospects for an interesting career.  After graduating near the bottom of his class with a BA in Athletics and a fair aptitude with gravitics, Otto found a niche in the Gram navy.  His engineering officer was overjoyed to have someone willing to stand double watches underway and mid-watches in port, so Otto moved up the ranks to Lt. quickly.  After six years under Commander Gorran the old fellow retired.  His replacement aboard the Speedwell was Lt. Cdr. Sandrasan, a stickler for rules and orders.  When the light commander learned that Otto had failed his engineroom quals twice he promptly shipped him dirtside for reassignment.  After a short and nearly disasterous stint with the Communications Command, Lt. Harkaman was made Assistant Director of Physical Training at the enlisted basic training facility.  Two years of sweaty sailors was about all Otto could take.  He hired on with the crew of the Honest Horrace and began his adventure to the stars.
