(2) 1106: Police Action on Efate / Regina (TNS 148-1106)

Supposedly the action on Efate was an Imperial Army operation; at the time no mention was made of Marine involvement.  Kalida knows, however, that the Army was assigned the routine tasks, including peacekeeping, while a limited force of Imperial Marines was dropped in to eliminate specific targets.
This was Kalida's first drop capsule insertion, from the fast assault ship Kingfisher.  No amount of training can really prepare you for your first orbital drop into combat, but she was outstanding in this role.  Backing up her attache success with a flawless combat operation secured her position as a career Imperial Marine officer.

(3) 1107: Garrison on Adabicci / Lunion

At this time there was a real threat to areas on the Imperial border; as it happens, a Fifth Frontier War was averted, but had the situation flared up, Adabicci would have been on the front line.  Kalida's assignment a couple of years ago as an attache gave her the qualifications to be stationed where social interaction with prominent civilians was required, while her performance on Efate left no doubt that if Adabicci became a combat zone, she'd rise to the occasion.
This is where she became friends with Sir Geoffrey of Adabicci, youngest son of the Duke of Adabicci.  Geoff had been in the Imperial Navy, as was the tradition in his family, but retired after receiving the Starburst for Extreme Heroism, the Imperium's highest military honor.  He didn't talk much about the experience -- some mutiny that was hushed up -- but he did have a lot of "sea stories" about his exploits with his friend Marquis Marcus Crestworthy.  "Marquis Marc" had gone into academia after the Navy, and after some graduate work at Plankwell University on Rhylanor, was currently doing research into parapsychology at the University of Mora.

(4) 1108: Ship's Troops on Kingfisher

After the crisis of 1107 took a surprising turn to peace, Kalida would have been wasted on a shore assignment.  The mission priority became patrol rather than defense, and she was assigned back to Kingfisher, the fast assault ship she'd served on during the Efate operation.
This time they shipped out from the Spinward Marches to the Imperial border with the Vargr.  Vargr corsairs, ready for the averted Fifth Frontier War, were harrassing shipping and raiding ports and bases.  The Imperial Marines were sent to counter the threat.
While they practiced orbital drops, they didn't perform any in combat situations.  The conflict was still at the stage of protecting Imperial assets, and they didn't get to see any ground action.  They did, however, see a lot of naval action.  Kingfisher was frequently in the right place at the right time, and space battles with corsair ships were plentiful.  During this time, rather than just waiting around for infantry action, she took the initiative to make sure her men were able to back up the Navy crew in their duties.  She herself passed quals in Gunnery.  When a third of the ship's regular crew were wounded or killed in a particularly violent action in a border system, her marines took up the missing positions, enabling the ship to continue her mission rather than abandon it and retreat.  Her initiative and dedication to duty netted her a promotion.

(1) 1109: Ship's Troops on Kingfisher

Still on the Vargr border, Kalida remained on the fast assault ship, this time taking the action to the corsair bases.  A sequence of running battles drove deep into corsair territory, and the Marines were called on for no less than seven orbital drops to attack corsair bases.    She still continued as gunner on the ship, showing a natural talent that impressed the regular crew enough to assign her a permanent console during all but drop maneuvers.    The seventh drop, however, went badly.  Intelligence was wrong, and what was supposed to be a drop into the cover of rolling hills overlooking the base turned out to be right in the middle of a troop staging area.  Four Marines never made it to the ground, their capsules blasted on final approach, and the rest took heavy casualties while fighting their way out.  Kalida herself took a round from a rocket grenade in her left thigh, and she was helped out by her troops as they retreated to an emergency retrieval position.

(2) 1110 - 1112: Command College and Training

While recuperating from her injuries on the Vargr Extents border, Kalida was assigned to Command College.  She spent two years in training for command positions, getting a solid knowledge of Tactics and Recon, and learning the details of command.  After that, another year was spent in hard field exercises, bringing her back up to speed in the physical demands of orbital drops and ground combat.  At the end of this three years, she was again promoted; she would always be in a command position from then until she retired.

(4) 1120: The Arden Crisis (TNS 1120)

Tensions with the Arden Federation suddenly came to a head, and it started to look like war might strike the Spinward Marches again.  Brigadier General Siena was appointed to command of a task force to infiltrate Arden space.  If war broke out, they would have performed disabling strikes against military targets in the federation itself.   As it turns out, the crisis passed.  Kalida's force remained hidden in Arden for another three months, then returned to standby status on Adabicci.
This was a covert mission, and is still classified -- Kalida cannot in any way discuss what she did in 1120, not even with superior officers or nobles.

Battledress

After the Arden Crisis, Kalida was able to spend some time (with her task force) on Adabicci, where she again hooked up with her old friend Sir Geoffrey.  On hearing she was going to retire at the end of the year, he gave her some advice and contacts on Rhylanor to help her get a start in civilian life.  In the meantime, she became a necessary invitee to all the best social occasions on Adabicci, hobnobbing with nobility as if born to it.
Almost as soon as she stepped out of the Marine base on Rhylanor, a civilian after twenty years of the Marines, she was in demand at all the good parties.  Her stories of shipboard and marine life, and her sense of style, quickly lead to a call behind the scenes for a title.
She was probably the last to know such a title was coming.  Sir Geoffrey had been at work on her behalf for some time.  At a genuine surprise party, she was officially awarded the title of Marchioness of Nakege by the Duke of Adabicci himself, a mere ten days after leaving the service.
The title unfortunately carried no immediate financial rewards.  Her hectic social life of the past three months had dried up her slim account, and her first year's retirement pay was already spent on the luxuries required for her new social circles.
Suddenly it was all rather much.  Flaring into the light after twenty years of service life was overwhelming, and she needed a break.  She decided to work her passage somewhere quieter for a while, and perhaps visit Adabicci and thank the Duke and Geoff -- if she could do so without creating a social stir.
So she signed up on the Lonely Teardrop, a type A2 Far Trader leaving the very next day on a voyage to Querion subsector.  It's in the right general direction for Adabicci, and certainly away from the cramping social engagements on Rhylanor.  It'll be interesting to see how the other half lives for a while...

Background Notes

Kalida has extensive estates on Nakege in the Jewell subsector of the Spinward Marches.  She knows nothing about them, having never been there.  The government of the world is by a company or corporation -- she does not know which one that might be.  The world population of 5000 people all work for the company.  Very little information is available about the world -- while it's in a significant strategic area, like her nearby homeworld of Jewell, it's insignificant otherwise.  It's an Amber Zone, but no reason for that classification is given.

No doubt her military status was a significant factor in being awarded a large interest there -- she could be expected to contribute to its defense in times of war with the Zhodani (which, it must be admitted, looks very unlikely now).  In the current diplomatic situation, she would expect months to years of warning before things deteriorated to requiring her presence.

All she knows is that her estates are very large, covering a significant portion of the planet.  The estates come complete with a mansion and staff -- but it's only been under construction since the beginning of the year.  Still, there is supposed to be *something* there should she decide to visit, even if it's only a collection of quonset huts.

She's the only noble landholder on Nakege; she is Marchioness of Nakege, a hereditary landed title.  Since the world -- other than her estates -- is company owned, and not by a major megacorporation, there is in theory a possibility to purchase enough of the company to own the whole system.

Some thoughts...

Kalida hadn't really thought about what she'd do after retiring. Her orginal "plan" was to relax for a while until she found something that interested her. The entire social whirl, in the absence of any other plans, was fun, but she didn't feel completely comfortable with it all. She has no idea what to do with her estates, and she needed to get away from the hectic lifestyle she accidentally (from her viewpoint) landed in.

So she found herself on Lonely Teardrop, which quickly turned out to be not the right place for her, as discussed elsewhere. She's not a real PITA when it comes to questionable activities, but she has her limits. Her problem with Lonely Teardrop is that she didn't know what they doing. If they were just into innocuous smuggling, it likely wouldn't worry her. She would have left the ship, but not done anything else. But if they were involved in something she'd see as dangerous to the Imperium, she most definitely would have dome something about it as quickly as she could have.  Obviously, there are shades between that she'd judge according to her view of their severity.

Basically, she isn't and never has been a martinet. She's always done what it takes to get her job done. She's definitely a "don't sweat the small stuff" person.

When she met the crew from Nightshade, her initial intentions were to simply work her way elsewhere and see where she'd end up, perhaps hopping ships until she got to Adabicci. But the crew and the ship interest her; they're somewhat out of the ordinary ;^).

And Vonish's mention of Sir Geoffrey and Marquis Marc cemented her wish to get on this ship in particular rather than any convenient ship. (I don't remember if you said she'd met the Marquis before or just knew of him from Geoff -- please remind me.) She now very much wants to know what exactly they are doing, and feels more comfortable that they're at least mostly above-board, or at least not so with good reasons. (Follow that?) She also figures that at some point she'll stand a good chance of running into the Marquis or Sir Geoffrey if she stays with this ship.

She also does not intend to let on that she knows Sir Geoffrey (or the Marquis, if she does), nor that she is noble herself. If she gets into a tight situation where that identity or her connections would make a difference, she'll use them. But not until then. And she'll keep her ears open for further mention of them or anyone else she might know.

Questions:

Since the Arden Crisis is classified, I assume a false account of that time was assigned to everyone involved and entered into the open portions of their career records. What's Kalida's "cover story" for that period?

(Staff college, as she told the Nightshade's crew)

What does she know about the Marquis?

Also, see questions and comments interspersed below:

Like the company mining towns in the 1800's? (and perhaps into the early 1900's, I
can't recall)

So she can safely put aside the whole issue until she feels like dealing with it.

<giggle> So what kind of staff do you get with quonset huts?

Now there's a frightening thought... something she's realized but has no intentions of
following through on. For now, at least. Who knows what she might want to do when she
finally finds out what the arrangements at this place really are...
