Sender: east-request@laser.east.sun.com Reply-To: east@laser.east.sun.com Apparently-To: Jen and I made it back from the RCR II Sunday night at about 7:15 PM. The bike performed flawlessly for 1000 miles of high speed slab and higher speed twisties ;-). I actually finally succeeded in scrubbing the tires ALL the way out to the edges and removing the final row of squid nubbies. A trip report will hopefully follow in the near future. Yesterday, while travelling from one office to the other (on the bike), my charging light came on. I had not noticed it when I rode into work in the morning, it just didn't go off after the bike was started in the afternoon. I rode straight home for fear that I would not make it later. So far I have checked the fuses (all okay), the 30 Amp fusible link on the left side below the seat, and inspected most connections. The battery is showing 12 volts when not running, and about 11-11.5 when the bike is running. I'll assume that if I have not missed any connections or fuses that I probably have a fried regulator or alternator. Anybody have any suggestions for how to check it out? How can I check that the alternator is working if nothing is receiving any charge from it? How can I check out the regulator? The ride to/from the RCR II was done in EXTREMELY high temps (around 100F) and the bike got quite hot (temp gage stayed in "normal" range tho). It appears that the rubber connector ends on the wires going from the alternator to the regulator may have melted/softened somewhat. Any ideas? I bought a battery tester thingy and all of the cells were showing deadness (no balls floating) so I put it on the charger. After 13 hours of charge, it is showing about 50% charge in all but one cell, with about 25-50% in the other (one ball floating, another one sort of hovering in the middle). Once the battery is charged and I am convinced that it is okay, I plan to check the alternator output voltage. If that is okay I will go over all connections with a fine tooth comb. If all that checks out do I assume that its the regulator or what? I guess I should be happy that the bike waited until I got home huh? :-( :-( Thanks in advance for any help...
