Actually, it's mostly the long of it --- too long. The route, as written, has 91 instructions (some of them U turns) and covers 250 miles. While this could be done in the time frame I have in mind (10am to 5pm, with one hour for lunch), it is much more realistic to expect that it will not be able to be done by a decent sized group that is making even fairly brief stops at all of the bridges on the route. WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR ME: If you are going on this ride, let me know which of the statements below you feel is closest to your sentiments about this ride. 1) I don't know what you're so worried about; let's do the route as planned! 2) I came to ride; I don't care if you cut out rides through most of the bridges in favor of keeping some of the roads all the way up to the more interesting Academia Bridge. (See below.) 3) The appeal of this ride for me is in numbers of bridges, and I would like to do less mileage. Oh well about missing the Academia Bridge, but please cut out that run up north and back. 3) In fact, not only should you cut out the Academia Bridge, it looks like you should cut out several of the Perry County Bridges, also, to get us under 200 miles. In fact, buddy, didn't you say something about 150 miles in your first message?! Also, if your motorcycle has a range of less than 120 miles, please let me know so I can include an extra gas stop for you in addition to the stopping opportunities I already have planned. It will not change the length of the route at all. About twenty five miles could be cut off of the route by not going as far north as it goes, all the way up to the Academia Bridge. Unfortunately, I feel that is one of the two most interesting bridges on the ride as the longest covered bridge in PA at 275 feet long. (There's also a mountain crossing to get up there.) A lot of the bridges in western Perry County can be cut out as being mostly very similar to each other in design. Also, one of them is accessible only via a dirt road (hard pack) of about a mile, but it is in a sort of nice setting. Overall, I could make it as short as about 160 miles while still including 4 bridges (only two of which are open to traffic), including the second of the two most interesting bridges. Thank you for your input. ============================================================================== COVERED BRIDGES RIDE RCR 5, 22 June 1996 Rules of the Ride: * Ride your own pace. The ride leader will be riding a slightly quick, definitely not peg scraping, pace. People who want to go faster are certainly welcome to, but you better be good at following directions. People who want to go slower need not worry; someone should always be waiting for you at the next turn. IF THERE ARE RIDERS BEHIND YOU WHO CANNOT SEE YOU WHEN IT IS TIME TO TURN, WAIT FOR THEM. Then if they have more riders behind them who cannot see the turn, they will wait, and so on. * You MUST start from Camp Westmar with at least enough gas to make it 52 miles to the first fuel opportunity in Newville, just before lunch. We will not stop, but you can stop and meet us at lunch a few minutes later. A fuel stop is planned in Ft Robinson (75 miles from Westmar) and Newville (115 miles from Ft Robinson). * The ride will leave Camp Westmar promptly at 10am. They are expecting us at the Cross Roads Restaurant at 11am. * I would apologize in advance for the bumpiness of parts of PA 233, but I don't run the PA DOT. Fortunately, some of it has recently been repaved.
